Whare Karioi 2024

Ko te tira ka kawe i ngā mahi a te rēhia ki wāhi kē, ki wāhi kē, ka kīia he whare karioi.

Hosted by NZ CODE in close partnership with Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu and Kotahi Mano Kāika (KMK), Wānaka Whare Karioi ā-Whenua 2024 (Whare Karioi) is the International Indigenous Digital Games Summit, a video games industry cultural summit held in Ōtepoti Dunedin, Aotearoa New Zealand, 17 - 21 June 2024.

Whare Karioi brought together Indigenous game developers from around the world to connect, share and support their indigeneity in the video games industry.

Consisting of talks, panels and workshops throughout the week, Whare Karioi also included evening networking events and field trips to key historical Ngāi Tahu landmarks.

PRE-SUMMIT: MONDAY 17TH - WEDNESDAY 19TH, JUNE 2024

The first two days were dedicated to an Indigenous only experience, offering our Indigenous visitors from around the world the opportunity to experience Ngāi Tahu Tikanga (cultural principles) and Kawa (cultural practices), and being formally welcomed onto Ngāi Tahu land at Ōtākou Marae and Puketeraki Marae with hands-on engagement.

Whare Karioi Pre-Summit created space for those who are comfortable and willing to share their own culture in any format that is appropriate, while discussing ways to maintain our rich cultural traditions within modern contexts.

Anything that was shared was done so with the intention of creating cultural bonds, and to not be replicated or communicated publicly. This is to ensure that all cultural IP shared retains its mana from whom it came.

SUMMIT: WEDNESDAY 19TH - FRIDAY 21ST, JUNE 2024

For the second, more open part of the Summit, we ran a single stream of talks, panels and workshops, beginning with Pōwhiri (welcome) keynote through to our Poroporoāki (closing), with time for networking and social events.

Whare Karioi Summit was open to a broader audience that included industry supporters of indigenous games studios and was held at Tūhura Otago Museum

The purpose of Whare Karioi Summit was to celebrate indigenous games but also share knowledge and best practice, with all sessions designed to deliver important insights.
